Hi Rob,
I am looking to buy a ukulele for a 43-year old friend. He is a an amateur musician but played in a band in his 20s for years (Guitar, bass, vocals). He’s wanted a uke for a longtime and picks them up and fools around with them whenever he has the chance. He’s a big guy–6’2”. I want to spend between $200 and $300. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Hi Anna,
That’s a good question! Given what you’ve told me, here’s what I’d recommend:
I’d go with a tenor size ukulele – it’s the largest size you can get that still really sounds like a uke, and I know my brother-in-law who is 6’4 feels that my concert size is just a tad too small for him.
As far as any specific recommendations, I will say that the Oscar Schmidt OU7T that I reviewed was a nice solid uke.
Another tenor I’ve had my eye on lately is the Lanikai Zebrawood tenor uke – I haven’t been able to find one locally to play before I review but it’s gorgeous and I’ve heard great things about how it plays. It’s normally kind of pricey (retails at $460) but I just did a price check and Amazon has it for $251 as of today, with an extra 16% off taken at checkout. It ends up being about $210.00. I’m not sure if that would be a good fit but you could probably get it with a gig bag & tuner for under $300 shipped if you buy it soon. Here’s the link to the one I’m talking about – click here.
All in all, I’d say go with a tenor uke and as far as brands are concerned, you’d be good with anything from Oscar Schmidt, Lanikai, Luna, Kala, or Cordoba.
